Red is associated with an evangelist while the winged rod of Aesculpius symbolises St Luke, known as the "dear and glorious physician" who emphasises the healing function of Christ to the sinner. The two gold bars represent St Luke's contribution to the New Testament – his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.
